It is with heartfelt sorrow that the family announces the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and daughter Laurie Zachanowich, at the Wawanesa Health Centre on Friday, March 6, 2026 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Laurie was born in Saskatoon on November 21, 1959, and later moved with her family to Winnipeg, Regina and Wawanesa where she attended and graduated high school. It was in Wawanesa that she met and married her husband, Don. After their marriage in 1979, they resided in Wawanesa and in 1982 they build a home on their farm north of Wawanesa. Here they raised their three daughters (Leslie, Jamie, and Crissy) and farmed until retiring in 2012, continuing to live at this location.
Laurie and Don enjoyed traveling over the years, and spending time at their Pelican Lake cottage- activities on the lake, long walks, leisurely afternoons, bonfires spent with friends and family. In more recent years, Laurie and Don spent winter months in their Maricopa, Arizona home. Here they participated in many activities, with friends both old and new.
Laurie was actively involved in the local community, participating in the Wawanesa Lioness Club and ladies’ curling club, amongst many other activities and events. She also enjoyed multiple creative hobbies, such as ceramics, quilting, and knitting.
Laurie’s most treasured times were spent with her family whom she loved dearly. Sewing Halloween and Ukrainian dance costumes for her daughters, taking them and later her grandchildren to swimming lessons, attending various school and extracurricular activities and functions. Her devotion to them will never be forgotten.
Laurie will be fondly remembered and forever missed by her loving husband of 46 years, Don; her daughters Leslie of Winnipeg, MB, Jamie and her children Bryson and Penny of Brandon, MB) and Crissy (Corey Wagner) of Kelowna, BC. Laurie is also survived by her mother Margaret Howard of Brandon, MB, and her twin sister Kelly (John Korchinski) of Duncan, BC.
Laurie was predeceased by her father Robert (Bob) Howard in 2003 and her brother Robert (Rob) Howard in 2019.
A heartfelt thank you to Laurie’s dear friends who have called, visited, and helped out in so many ways. The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Cancer Care Brandon and the Wawanesa Health Centre. The extraordinary, compassionate care Laurie received will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Laurie’s life will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the Wawanesa Community Hall with a reception to follow. Everyone is welcome.
Friends who desire may make a donation in memory of Laurie to the BRHC Foundation, Western Manitoba Cancer Centre, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B3.
